Univest recently announced it is expanding into Maryland with a focus on Baltimore and the surrounding areas. Matt Cohen has been hired to serve as Market President for Maryland. Matt joins Univest from a regional bank where he served as Business Banking Regional Manager for Baltimore.
Work is currently underway to identify a location to serve as Univest’s regional headquarters. In addition to building out a commercial lending team, Matt will be working with Univest’s various lines of business to ensure Univest’s full suite of financial products and services are brought into this new market.
“We are very excited to welcome Matt to the Univest family and are excited about the opportunity to enter this new market,” said Jeffrey Schweitzer, President and CEO, Univest Financial Corporation. “The success we have seen in our Central PA region demonstrates our ability to enter and grow in new markets. Our Central PA region started as a lift out of fifteen employees in 2016 and has grown to a team of more than sixty-five with $1.2 billion in loans outstanding.”

What are you looking forward to about your new role with Univest?
The opportunity to grow a bank in a new market is exciting. Having worked with entrepreneurs my entire career, this is the closest a commercial banker can get to being in their shoes. Univest’s commitment to people, community and growth will fill a gap in the Baltimore market for a customer and community-focused bank.
I look forward to bringing the bank and our resources to the market and offering thoughtful conversations that help customers grow their business. We will leverage our networks to connect people and communities while listening to needs and addressing opportunities.
Tell us about your background.
In nearly 20 years in the industry, I have worked on almost every form of traditional bank financing. My clients and employees have always appreciated my creative and out-of-the-box thinking that helps them achieve their goals not only for today but also considering 5-10 years down the road.
From a leadership perspective, my expertise is strategic sales and people development. I particularly enjoy learning about each member of the team and their motivations then strategically using those to help them grow into whoever it is they want to be as a banker. My greatest accomplishments have been watching team members achieve greater levels of success in sales or management by focusing on what they do well and sharing it with others.
I attended Syracuse University and earned a B.S. in both Accounting and Finance.
Are you actively involved in your community?
I am a member of the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital Foundation Board, Past Chair and member of various committees. I also serve as a Board Member of Summit Chase HOA and am a coach for my son’s team in the Roland Park Baseball League.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my wife, Rachel, our two children and our dog, Piper. I am an avid golfer and a past board member of Woodholme Country Club. I am also passionate about running and enjoy participating in races in the mid-Atlantic region which included the Philadelphia Marathon in November 2021.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that you live by?
Two of my favorites are, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” And, “You can’t change what happened yesterday, but you can impact what you will do tomorrow.”
